There's something very "home-cooking" in the best possible way about Cafe de Nopal - as if someone in Mexico invited you for dinner at their house. This extends beyond the food - the staff are incredibly warm and welcoming, almost like you're a guest. They have a cheeky sign proclaiming themselves mex-mex, highlighting this is real Mexican food rather than a US reinvention - the only place in Finland I've ever seen mole sauce. So far the only fly in the ointment is the lack of a liquor licence, which their in the process of acquiring. Well, that and the rampant popularity, fueled as far as I can see by local Latin Americans, makes it difficult to get in!

The food here always tastes so fresh. The Thai salads are a particular standout - fresh with a spicy punch. In general the chili-rating scheme here should be considered a whole chili hotter than the rest of town - three chilis will really make you sweat! The staff are friendly, and the service is prompt. The only downsides are it's difficult to get a table, and in summer time you might feel like you're actually in Thailand - the restaurant can get a bit hot. Still, worth it for flavorful food at a good price.

Just the best cakes in town, with seriously good baked goods (cookies, croissants) available too. It feels a bit too much like a shop for me to enjoy sitting in, but their cakes are available in Design Forum cafe and Kaakaopuu. For their cookies, croissants etc you have to make the pilgrimage.

This has become my favourite fine-dining restaurant. The focus on local, seasonal, mostly organic ingredients combined with the kitchen's immense creativity makes for very unique, often earthy dishes that just work. The strong connection to the locale makes it feel like the gastronomic equivalent of a nature walk. The restaurant really does feel like the partnership its name suggests: the sommelier not only matches wines with aplomb but will also pair teas with your dishes upon request - I recommend you try this at least once. The staff are very friendly, talented, passionate and accommodating - a rare combination.

I tried Vegemesta after rave reviews from vegetarian friends. Since I eat meat, I'm usually looking for something else from vegetarian food - I prefer vege burgers to taste of chick-peas and cilantro than to pretend to be meat, but Vegemesta is still one of my favourite places to grab a late bite in town. The food is really filling, the vege-meat is tasty - especially the seitan burgers, and the atmosphere is very late-night college-campus - relaxed, friendly. The burgers are more expensive than equivalent meat products available nearby, but they feel much healthier than a kebab from across the road.

Really tasty pizza, great base, quality toppings. The wine list is extensive, and the location, especially if you get a seat outdoors is wonderful. The staff did seem a bit rushed when we were there - some of our food was a long time coming, and we got the wrong bottle of wine, but hey - wine, sun, pizza, what's to complain about!

Really wonderful food, in many cases the combinations made familiar ingredients come together in a whole new fresh way. The stand-out for me was a foie gras mouse served with rhubarb and delicate apple slices. There's often a lot more going on in any given dish than at similar restaurants, you sometimes feel like asking for advice from the chef how to combine everything into optimal forkfuls, but everything comes together very satisfyingly. The restaurant very helpfully offered us the wine packet with "half-pours" - great if you find six glasses with six courses a bit too filling. The "unique" wine packet had some excellent, idiosyncratic wines that were paired very well. All in all a wonderful meal, I'll be back.

It didn't quite live up to the hyping by friends, but it is pretty good. The Lasagne was tasty, the artichoke side-salad was special, and overall you get a really good portion of tasty food, in a cosy setting - nothing at all to complain about.

This has to be the best lunch in Helsinki. The option of a small work-friendly glass of lunch for a couple of euros is a perfect indulgence. It really makes you wonder how they can manage to serve such tasty food for such a low price, and if they can do it, why can't anyone else?

With a name like "Luomo" I was expecting a bit of a serious moralistic "locavore" approach to the food, but this is the most light-hearted, fun and playful "fine-dining" meals I have ever had. The food would have been exceptional just ladled into a bowl, but the presentation really turned the meal into a delightful experience. Some of the wines seemed to be organically or ecologically produced, there were some very interesting unfiltered ones, and the pairings were complimentary. After the stellar savoury courses the deserts were a bit of let-down, one was just much too sweet for my taste, but overall a fantastic dining experience with great food. Recommended.

The first time I went there, I had the best shot of espresso I've had in Finland. Since then I've had a couple of weaker, longer espressos that just weren't so good - fine, but not outstanding. Sandwiches are good, sweet selection is a bit meagre at times. It's almost always full.

The pizza is very reasonably priced (€6.50 for take-out). It's good "finnish" pizza, with a good finnish pizza base (particularly tasty crust), and good finnish pizza toppings, but it's still very much in the local style, and if you can't abide that, you won't like it.

The main weakness is the machined rice - maybe it's not so noticeable on rolls, but on nigiri it feels and tastes a bit industrial - exactly like something from a supermarket. The tuna was sliced a bit thin.

Hands down the best steak I've ever had. From the first to the last bite it was pure heaven, if there's "entrecôte" on the menu, look no further. Our waiter was knowledgeable and made a great desert wine pairing recommendation.

There are very few places to get real food around this neck of the woods after 10pm on a Friday. Not only did Cafe Talo deliver, they delivered in style - really tasty open-faced BLT, with parma ham wrapped chicken breast, and a tasty side-salad. I plan to go back to try the food at a more reasonable hour soon. The atmosphere is great, the upstairs is decorated with tractor-seats as chairs, downstairs has the old-fat superhero mural paintings that used to grace Superbar back in the day, and a Dj was spinning funky records.
