Paras ruokakokemus on se milloin hinta ja laatu kohtaavat hymyilevän tarjoilijan ja vähän hullun keittiömestarin. Ja sama englanniksi: My food philosophy is best put as "Never eat more than you can lift." Och på svenska, min matfilosofi: "Det går lika bra med selleri"

Queen Sheba fills a gaping hole on the Helsinki restaurant scene with excellent food but slight lack of aplomb in dealing with success. What this in practice means is that it seems that the popularity of the restaurant has caught the owners slightly unaware as the main problem of the restaurant is that they cannot deal effectively with a constantly crowded restaurant - delivery is not speedy, and there is some hesitation when you ask them questions (also when we were there they had no table for someone who had booked) - but these things are fixable as the restaurant finds it place and pace. What would be harder to fix is if they were lacking in the food department: Ethiopian food has been as under-represented in Helsinki ((as a good Chinese dumpling place (hint)), and here I daresay the restaurant does not disappoint. The portions are big, pricing is right and the spices capture the Ethiopian cuisine well (I had the Gored Gored and my companion the Awaze Tibs)- but as with most ethnic food it's an acquired taste. I enjoy the lunches even more than dinner as eating different stews the injera (bread) works well as a lunch concept. The couple who own the place are very nice and seem set to make this place work. The restaurant has the tools for success, now they'll need to work on delivery a bit more.

Takes the concept of selfservice to new levels - in good and bad. If this is the future of service my restaurant consumption might go down - at times it feels more like an exercise in logistics than a relaxing restaurant visit: should you first queue to the drinks section or the pasta or the pizza in order to use your time most effectively? The system that loads your order into a credit card works well and it pays dividends when you leave and do not have to wait for the bill (always a problem at S-group's restaurants it seems). The chefs where nice and helpful although you can sense the stress of dealing directly with customers when taking orders (rather than servers). The pasta was actually quite good (not that many chains manage al dente in Helsinki) for this kind of chain/concept place, the pizzas were so-so (accompanied by quite long waiting times). The place itself is big and quite spacious, it comes at a price of soulless Ikea style décor with white stucco walls (which for some converts to "modern") It's a pity that the cut in serving staff converts not to lower prices but directly into higher margins - and charging for tap water - that's just adding insult to injury.

An excellent, homely place that earns it's place on the café map of Helsinki. The homemade (at least they taste like it) muffins are excellent and the cappuccinos they make are well-above average. The people who run it and the staff are always nice and cheerful.

Best eatery in Itis - but that's a bit like competing in the Special Olympics. To be fair, Classic Pizza carries its own weight - it's the kind of place I would like to dislike.. but cannot as the pizzas are very good. Classic Pizza makes a detour from the chain concept by going for fresh produce and less greasy, right-sized pizzas. If you're in Itäkeskus and feeling hungry this is the only place you should go to.

As a general idea and concept A21 is exceptional in every sense - the "story" of the menu is fantastic, service is very dedicated, yet in overall execution it falls short of becoming a classic mainstay. In order to be exposed to the full experience we had the 8 course menu with the cocktail package. In some of the dishes the combination to cocktails and their taste worked exceptionally well (apetizers and dessert) - in others the combinations were either not working (birch/apple coctail with fish) or just a bit weird (the cloudberry coctail with the wildboar). I understand that for some this might work, but for other diners it is just an overload of sweetness - after the euphoria of the first cocktail/food combo, I gradually got fed up on the overpowering sweetness, and at that point I understood why wines have ruled the dining rooster for 8000 years. I will definitely recommend to everyone to go to A21 to experience a great gimmick - but personally, although I'm glad I went, I do not long to get back to these sweet woods. For me A21 is a once in a lifetime experience.

Sometimes you are so positively surprised by finding quality food in unlikely places that you don't know what to say - and that's what the new owner of café Amico delivers. Previosuly inhabted by an OK sandwich place/café has now turned into a very unlikely but authentic Italian lunch pop-in. Unfortunately they have not (yet) changed their name so it went past me for a long time. While there are very few chairs and tables due to the non-optimal layout of the room it should not scare you away, as the lunch dishes are Itaianesque good/great. Best kept food secret in Helsinki, as of now...

You won't leave hungry from Rollhouse, that's for sure. Interesting take on wrap food; similar to tortillas and buritos but still disntinct. The wraps are big, 30 cm according to the chatty and superfriendly owner. Everything was made fresh, which meant a bit of a wait for the food, Rollhouse also get a bonus point for the homemade hot- and tartar sauces. I deducted one point from the food because whereas the beef and seafood rolls were both excellent the vegetarian roll was very disappointing in its blandness. Despite this, all in all I warmly recommen a visit to Rollhouse because of the friendly staff and excellent price/quantity ratio.

Usually when I see a menu with over 100 items I run - it's not a good sign. If the place was to focus a little bit on the dishes that they do quite well (like the pizzas) and scrap some things which are not so good (half of the pasta dishes), then I could see this place thrive. It is clear that they see themselves competing with Chinese restaurants and that clientèle by competing on price and offering cheap lunch, but still the could take a leaf of of eg. Don Corleone's book (less is more) and still succeed. I wouldn't recommend the pastas not to mention other produce because it is a bit of a lottery quality-wise, the safe bet are the pizzas. The food was slightly better than I feared (I will look past the atrocious salad table), very bland though, but unfortunately there is nothing that this place can offer that currently would make me go back.

Coffee is good and ciabattas are great, arguably the best you get in Helsinki (for what it's worth). They show that with fresh bread and fresh produce you cannot go wrong, and the pricing is quite right. The place has a bustling atmosphere and they deliver food on the go with an impressive speed. The Greek owner (?) is a bit of a character and the "service attitude" can be a bit on the shocking side if you're not prepared for it.

Caffè con arroganza. Undoubtedly "La Torre" serves some of the best cappuccino, and arguably the best drip-brewed (Fi: "suodatinkahvi") in town, the espresso is also at times extraordinary but seems more uneven in quality depending on the day. They have the advantage over places such as Kaffecentralen by being located smack-in the middle of town. Unfortunately this comes with two disadvantages: 1) It's always crowded (I can live with this) 2) the service mentality is highly uneven depending on the day/time, some of the baristas serve you with the NYC-STFU/Couldn't Give a S*** "service"-mentality, which I don't particularly long for in small-town Helsinki. The ciabattas are good (but not great), evidently they use quite good produce but they come with the overprice of the location.

I don't expect anything when I visit restaurants located in shopping centres or stores, and that's why I am not overly disappointed with Factory-Aleksi. The one thing that Factory has got going for them unlike many other store restaurants is that they have space, quite a lot of it (e.g this means that it's also a pram friendly place). If you are seated in one of the booths you can have a pretty private lunch, not feeling that you are in the middle of a shopper highway. Unfortunately where the restaurant does not rise above same priced competitors is the quality of the food. The buffet is not bad but the unevenness of the food is quite appalling. For us the chicken was quite good but the pork was dry as bone. Thus you are forced into the buffet-lotto-mentality: Pile up as much as you can and pray that something will be good; food waste at its worst.

If you recalibrate your expectations when going to Sumo you will not be disappointed... but neither will you be thrilled. The somewhat dualistic reviews at eat.fi are probably all spot on - what Sumo fails to deliver is even, stable quality for a variety of dishes. Sumo has a lot going for them, the premises are nice and clean (if a little sterile ambience for such a small place), the staff is very nice and helpful, and the service was fast when we went. The sushi that we had was a bit below what could be expected for the price, you were not stuck with the feeling that the fish was just pulled from the sea, but on the other hand comparable to your average sushi-place in Helsinki. I also had the Yakitori, which was much better. A bonus point also for the lunch specials they serve. Hopefully the evenness will come over time, Sumo is the kind of place that could go either way, improve on their weaknesses or slip into lazy food and a quick bang for the buck. Hoping for the former.

Luomo attempts the delicate art of balancing between creative and conservative fine dining, with somewhat mixed results. In many ways Luomo is a different (and welcome) creature on the Helsinki dining scene, on the one hand the atmosphere and some of the dishes are reminiscent of 'traditional and safe' Michelin restaurants that you find across continental Europe (a niche previously inhabited by the now defunct George / Carma) , where the chefs are content with following trends and not upsetting the most conservative gourmands, doing things right but not very adventurously. On the other hand you have the 'crazy&creative' bits (that you find at places such as Chez Dominique), balancing between creative and pretentious (like most modern Michelin restaurants). At Luomo this aspect is most notably visible in the playful names of the dishes, and in the geographical spread of dishes - we had the five course menu and it took you from somewhat traditional blinis to Irish seaweed, sesame seed sand and ginger mist to the bluecheese ice cream. It all sounds terribly exciting, but at times the most exciting part was the name and not the taste. The danger is also a lack of a red thread in the menus, but here I think the restaurant manages quite well even if it on paper sounds like a slippery thematic slope. The service was impeccable yet relaxed. Luomo definitely has a place in the Helsinki Michelin range, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly where it wants to be on the food map.

"Please, sir, I want some more". The place is less dickensian and more hip scenester, but the restaurant provided a most memorable restaurant experience. First off, the premises are very good looking and the atmosphere is very trendy-european - and the clientèle is thereafter (if you do not like young and good looking, close your eyes) - one downside is that it was very crammy, you could hardly move our chair without bumping into the neighbours' table. Service was informal but impeccable - it's clear from the start that these guys now what they're doing. Which brings us to the food, the menu is set and there's only one - but everything on it was very good, it's simple food (even surprisingly so) with clean flavours, a small minus for unexciting side-dishes. I had probably the best reindeer meat I've ever had, incredibly good. But... the portions are really small even for a short man like myself, and in a sense this would be OK if this place was a clearcut fine-dining/Michelin place but that's not really how it feels or tastes (and on eat.fi they're even registered as a bistro). And with this we come to the high point of service: after main course we were asked "Would you like to have some more?". Never in my restaurant visits in Helsinki has this happened in a place such as this. It might be a savvy business trick (keeping costs down by not making larger portions), but it works - consider me impressed (and fooled?).

Some reviews have branded this place as fast in service, I disagree wholeheartedly; an average waiting time of 20 minutes is unacceptable at a noodle bar. And if my experiences are out of the ordinary then it also says something about the unevenness of the service. However, the cashier/cook was very friendly so that evens out the experience. Now to the noodles themselves, underseasoning and a misleading spice chart are the foremost problems as are overcooked noodles, higher marks for the vegetables and produce that seemed fresh for a foodcourt place.

Amicas unecological flagship. Plastic spoons, paper cups and plates, prepacked estonian sallads etc.; they've got it. Torni is the archetypal place where you'd go if you have a medium-sized expense account (ie someone else pays) to entertain clients who expect that the food is somewhat expensive but are not so picky if food quality match prices. The food is safe and quality is good - even though you'd like them not to serve burned scampi at these prices. The service was good and attentive, but the wine suggestions were really off. The main problem with Torni is that nowadays you can get so much more and better in Helsinki at these prices. The menu is so safe that it is bordering on boring.

It's rare that I'd start a review with a *lol*, but this place needs to be visited, atmosphere inhaled, food tasted and conversations listen in to in order to understand how a restaurant deservedly ends up with reviews ranging from "neveragains" to "lovedit!s". The way everything played out was from an absurd movie that casts the restaurant's employees according to national stereotypes. When we entered to dine the head chef was standing outside smoking, you could almost taste the dismay when we entered, he eventually entered the premises once the orders were put in, but not before shouting to the waiter that we'd have to be "gone within an hour". The sous-chef and the waiter were both very friendly (informing us that we could stay longer). The kitchen is open so you can actually see (and hear) the chefs work. You might think this is a good idea - but very soon you'll understand why not more restaurants do this. First off, about the food - you can see that these guys know how to cook - the food is real handicraft, amazing pastas (we had chicken, tarragon and artichoke) and risottos (scampi and coriander)- but you can also see that is all routine, little energy - it's a job without passion and trying. You can notice that in the food - ranging from sloppy to amazing- it also explains why you'll see reviews stating the food is bad, because they can't bother to redo it if it has flaws or why they'd do sloppy things like not cleaning the grill between grilling fish and fruit. The food could be so great and on a consistent basis (what distinguishes the greats from the goods) - if they'd just tried that little extra. The other noticable thing was the amount of bull they were dishing out about the customers seated in the next room; age, sex, education, money - you name it, we heard it. So if you don't want them to talk sh*t about you when you're eating - I'd suggest you sit at the tables by the kitchen. There is no other restaurants like this in Helsinki - and that's why it needs to be visited by everyone who cares about food - and unintended entertainment.

Ravintola no11 completes the Classic Helsinki Straight Flush that is Seahorse, Kolme Kruunua, Elite, Kosmos and Salve. It does deliver on expectations, timeless early 1950 warm-wood-panel atmosphere, white cloth and meat hearty (as in fullbodied/fatty) food - vegans do not bother. We had the wienerschnitzel (huge, very tasty) and the grilled liver (excellent) - both delievered in terms of taste and size. Personally I think the food has got slightly better and is more even than it was during the last Kuusihokki years. The restaurant is a classic in the Helsinki arena and it delivers better than e.g. Kosmos and Elite. No 11 is not a restaurant for everyone but for those with the acquired taste, it's one of the best.
