The service was really nice. Very attentive, something I’m not at all used to in Finnish restaurants My companion settled on fried rice with king prawns and chicken (about 13,00€). I decided to go for squid & king prawns with garlic and basil (about 14,00€).

The portions aren’t huge like in many of the Chinese (etc...) restaurants here that could feed about 2 people, but it doesn’t matter because the flavor is good. Really good!

The squid wasn’t over cooked or rubbery. It was just right. The king prawns were a good size. My dish came with a chalice (I can’t think of any other word for it) of rice, which was nice and fluffy. I was happy with the prawn + squid to vegetables ratio and there was enough spicyness and flavor. I might be biased but I love the spicy, salty, sweet and sour elements in Thai cooking. The only problem I had was trying to scoop the sauce onto my rice because the plate was too shallow or perhaps it’s just me failing.

I would go back again. The price was right and the food was good. Plus if you take out you get -40% off most dishes!

I’ve been wanting to go to Kokomo since it opened because from the reviews I’d read it sounded like a fun place to go and most importantly they have cocktails!

My brother took the Tiki Potatoes 4,50€ from the Mini Tiki list and I went for a much needed cocktail. The potatoes were deep fried and came with wasabi mayonnaise which apparently was insanely good. The mini tiki list has small kind of tapas like plates something that would be great with a group of friends.

For his main course my brother went for the Ponzu Ribs 22,00€ which are Kokomo style ribs with the same tiki potatoes he had as a starter and wasabi mayonnaise. I don’t know what the ribs tasted like because he wouldn’t let me have any but judging from that and the content munching sounds I guess they were pretty good.

I had a tough choice between the ribs and the steak but when my brother said he wanted the ribs my choice was made. The Aloha Kokomo 23,00€ comes with a char grilled 300 g entrecote steak (by far my favorite cut because of the high fat content ), bean-bacon stew & tiki potatoes. The dish is then topped off with a chili red wine sauce. I’m salivating just thinking about that dish!

The waiter didn’t ask how I wanted my steak so I asked her if they could make it medium rare. She told me that the kitchen didn’t want to do that due to it not making the high fat content so enjoyable. I have to slightly disagree on this point but thought heck I’ll have it medium then if that’s what they suggest. Although the steak wasn’t bad for a medium steak I think I still would have preferred for it to be medium rare. Nonetheless the dish had some good flavors and portion size was perfect. The bean & bacon stew was well seasoned. The potatoes weren’t super crisp which usually puts me off but they were well seasoned so I didn’t mind.

The cool thing about both dishes was the way they were presented. My dish came on a frying pan and the ribs were on a stone hot plate type thing which is an awesome idea because so often (in Finland) you get dishes that are cold by the time you’ve taken the first bite.

So what cocktail did I take you ask? Well the Kokomo Zombie 10,00€ of course! It’s Kokomo’s signature cocktail. The menu promises a “damn Strong Rum Punch with the freshness of a passion fruit, softness of orange and pineapple spiced up with 3 different Bacardi rums.” Yup and that’s pretty much what I got in my zombie cup Oh it was so good and well balanced so much so that the bubbly happiness that comes with being tipsy sneaks up on you!

Kokomo has good food, excellent cocktails and a very laid back unhurried feel (read: don’t go if you’re in a hurry!). I’m definitely going back some time just not sure when I'm back in Helsinki.

OK tasting pizza on the go. I've had the Frutti di mare (5,90e) a handful of times. It's been ok. The pizza is a good size and has an ok amount of toppings. Taste is not bad but nothing special either. But then again it's not exactly a place you would go other than for convenience. Service is always fast which is good.

This restaurant space has gone through a lot of changes over the past few years so it was interesting to see how they had revamped it.

Walking in I was really surprised how much they had changed the whole layout and look of the place since Inferno. I mean they had this nice brick lain entrance and the whole bar & restaurant has these cool little details like baseball bats for table legs. Everything from the logo to the menu to the servers outfits to (even) the hand wet wipes (or whatever they’re called) are so well thought out. So defo props to them for atmosphere!

They have a very greasy burger and wings filled menu (just what I want) I think they have like 15 different hot wings sauces AND these long burgers AND they have chili bacon fries…(!!)

I had to have the Chili bacon fries 6,90€ and I already had hot wings on my mind so Original Sticky Wings (12pcs) 8,90€ it was. I also semi-badgered my companion into having one of the X-tra Long Burgers just because I wanted to see what they looked like.

The fresh made fries were good on their own but with the added bacon bits they were heavenly! Although the bacon chili was really hard to scoop up without any utensils. The wings were good as always. Nothing to complain about. The X-tra Long Burger (15,90€) was long and aparently good tasting. Portion size was good in both dishes but had I not taken the fries with 12 pcs wings I would have been left a little hungry.

We didn't have to wait for long to get our food or drinks. But we were there at 16:00 sharp on saturday when the place opened. Service was ok. Not bad but nothing special.

All in all a good alternative to the many wings places of Tampere. Competition is always healthy. I would go back and have recomended it.

Dropped in to have lunch. Wasn't expecting that much since I'm not a big fan of Pancho Villa. They were packed but we managed to find a seat at the end of a long table. We didn't get seated though not sure if seating was self-service.

I had the normal sized bacon burger (10,50€) with fries. I don't know why but I've never got good fries at any Pancho. They are cut too big and chunky and they're never crispy enough. They taste floury and they have some strange paprika like stuff dusted on them. The dip was strange tasting not sure what it was supposed to go with. It has a icky sweet aftertaste I'm not sure I like. The burger was OK. It was good but nothing excellent. Slightly above a fast food joint burger. If the fries and dip were better I would say the price is worth it but since the weren't that good I have to say Pancho is a little bit overpriced in terms of price vs. quality. In addition I was left a little hungry after the meal.

Service was OK. Our dishes came out surprisingly quickly since we just missed the lunch rush however I'm a little let down by the lack of actual interaction.

Popped in for a quick lunch on a Saturday. Was a bit skeptical as I've had mediocre experiences in the past. For example the ribs I had once were terrible. But my friend wanted to go and I was hungry so I gave in.

The service was nice. It was fairly empty at the time and they had quite a lot of staff. Drinks came fast and with them some nachos and salsa. The salsa was a little bland but considering they were on the house I can't complain.

I went for the Whiskey Chicken (14,40€) because it came with bacon. The bacon turned out to be pretty soggy and not nearly as crispy as I would have liked however the Crispy Slice potatoes were crunchy and good. I didn't really understand the dish because the chicken is brushed with whiskey oil but then covered cheddar cheese sauce. It kind of defeated the whole whiskey concept since the sauce drowned all other flavors out. Still it wasn't bad. Kind of bland but not bad. The salsa was alright as was the corn on the cob. Portion size was just right. Plus points for the chicken being moist and cooked just right.

I think with a lot of these chain restaurants the dishes are dumbed down in taste. They all taste pretty much the same regardless of whether you take the Whiskey Chicken or the Garlic Chicken which is a shame. The shouldn't be afraid to season things properly. If I want the Whiskey Chicken I'm going to want to taste at least some whiskey, right?

So all in all an OK experience, much better than the last time I went. I might even go back but only if someone else suggests it.

I bought a coupon from CityDeal that gave you a four course meal for two people for 39,00€. I've been meaning to go to Wistub for a while now but for some reason it is a little out of the way and no one knew much about the place so I never got around to going until now.

The restaurant turned out to be much smaller than I had expected and immediately you walk in your struck by a cozy intimate feeling. The waitress was attentive and seated us down and explained what was included in the deal. We decided to start off with a KirRoyal (7,80€) which set off the mood very well.

For a starter we had the Tarte flambée gratinée. It was much bigger than I expected for a starter but I didn't mind as it tasted so good. The 'Alsatian pizza' was topped with bacon, onions and Gruyère cheese and crème fraîche. It tasted just as good as it looked and smelt. There was just the right amount of bacon and melted cheese to dough ratio and the 'pizza' was fluffy and crusty in all the right places. A great start to our meal.

Our second course consisted of a selection of sausages and smoked pork with sauerkraut and potatoes. Everything on the plate was wonderful and went really well together. There was nothing that didn't belong or that didn't go well together in the dish. The touch of mustard on the side crowned the meats. The meats were flavorful, hearty and authentic in taste. It was a good thing that the portion size was what it was as this kind of food really fills you up!

Before we dug into desert we were brought a selection of cheeses and some bread. The cheeses were incredible. I've had brie many times before but this one was served at just the right temperature and it was really good. Also the blue cheese was exceptional. Perhaps a little too strong and salty for many but I fell in love with it.

To finish off a great meal we had an Alsatian ice cream cake which was much more elegant than I had expected. Again the flavors were just right. There was a good balance of sweetness in the ice cream and marengue which was countered by the slight bitterness of the berries.

All in all a very enjoyable experience. The food was really good and the menu was well thought out. The service was attentive and knowledgeable without being stuffy or stuck up. A very cozy-homey-atmosphere yet high class. If you want good honest well made food go here. I recommend it and will be recommending it to many. On one hand it is a shame that the location is a bit off from the main street but then again that's part of the charm of this gem. Looking forward to going back.

Your average Finnish mall eatery.

There were four hungry people in need of something fast so fast service and quantity over quality were key. Fonda del Sol fit the bill pretty well.

We ended up there on a Saturday afternoon during Hullut Päivät when this side of Jumbo was packed to the max with shopper. Luckily we were there a little after the lunch rush so we got seated immediately. Service was efficient, not particularly personal but in a place like this who cares. We got our orders in and got our drinks almost immediately. It didn't take long for our food to arrive either which was amazing considering they were almost full.

I went for the Pepper Steak (20,90€) and my companions had burgers (10,50-11,90€) and the South Texas Steak (21,80€).

The burgers looked good as did the Texas steak. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out just like I wanted it. The taste of the food was good. The sauce was nice but nothing phenomenal, perhaps a little drab. It did lack pretty much all the tastes that it promised on the menu "spicy cognac-chilli-pepper" but having said that it wasn't bad. The fries were mostly good and crisp. I was a little disappointed in portion size and after finishing off my plate I dug into my dad's fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw again was not bad but a little generic in taste, a little too much liquid(?).

All in all as a mall restaurant on a hectic day Fonda del Sol turned out to surpass my expectations.

Randomly ended up here with no expectations. The restaurant was fairly full. We sat down and a server came almost immediately. I opted for the Lamb Chops (29,90€) and my companions had the South Texas Steak (26,30€) and the BBQ Ribs (18,90).

The atmosphere is laid back. The music wasn't too loud but the lighting was a little dim. There was a cozy atmosphere and a lot of chatter from the people around us. Definitely not a date place or a business lunch place but perfect for a family dinner or lunch with friends.

Even though they were fairly packed it didn't take long for our food to arrive. The portions were a good size with a good meat to starch ratio. The BBQ Ribs were succulent, juicy and falling off the bone but they did need a touch of BBQ sauce so it was good that there was some on the side. Apparently the steak was good too. My lamb chops were a good medium minus like I ordered. Some of the potatoes however were a little limp. The garlic-nut sauce was really good. However it would be nice if they gave you a steak knife with the lamb chops too as they were a little hard to eat with the normal knife but this is a minor detail.

It was nice to find a decently priced easy going restaurant in the center of Helsinki. Service was attentive and efficient and overall I enjoyed the experience. And the restaurant was a good choice for the occasion: laid back, cozy and informal.

Went to have lunch with two friends. We were looking for something cheap, fast and filling. At lunch time Lotus Garden has your average chinese lunch buffet.

The salad table has corn, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber etc. and I walked right past that stuff to the steaming piles of pork, chicken, beef...

I didn't taste the soup but apparently it was good but not spicy. It had chicken and bits of mushroom so I guess your generic buffet soup. In stead I went straight for the fried noodles and different meats. The noodles were a little greasy but still very good. I also liked all the meat dishes. The pork dish was especially good with big thick slices of succulent pork in some thick sauce. They also had some deep fried wings which I topped with some of the mystery sauce they have in little pots at the table. Yummy!

The food was what we expected. Predictable, safe, good and filling. Lotus Garden gets extra points for the Geisha chocolates with your tea/coffee and for the very nice but non-intrusive service. Would go back for the lunch buffet or take away (-50%).

Had the buffet lunch. I thought it lacked taste, more so than other Chinese buffets. A bit of a disappointment, not that I was expecting anything to write home about. Still the food really did seem more greasy than it should (not that I usually complain about that). It is no less inviting than other fast food restaurants stuck to the side of a mall. Probably wouldn't go back. I might consider going back and ordering off the à la carte if it was in a more convenient place... maybe.

Young hipster/student place. Packed in the evenings. The toasts are big, filling and good. The salads are good too. I recommend getting smoked salmon for either. Sometimes it takes a while to get your food, but that's OK because you're not supposed to go here in a hurry. Sip your drink (they have a nice beer list and some great coffee and tea) kick back on one of the worn out sofas. Café Europa is laid back and inviting. Honest wings restaurant tucked next to a bingo hall.

Took a big portion of wings. They were good, perhaps a little bit more vinegary than the ones I've had at other places. It was packed with happy groups of people talking loudly like a wings joint should be. The beer comes in big frosty mugs/pints.

If you want an authentic Tampere no-nonsense wings and beer experience this is a good place to go.

Not bad. Had the Phad Sii Iu Khung fried noodled with prawns (13,90€). The taste was good and was well spiced. The ingredients were fresh and noodles weren't too greasy. The prawns were a good size. I was super hungry when I went so the size of the dish was initially a bit of a disappointment, how ever it did fill me up.

Been here a few times with my grandparents. It's a perfect compromise. They've both found a dish they like so they don't feel overwhelmed by a menu they don't understand. The food is traditional, fish, steaks and one vegetarian dish. The sides are also traditional (and safe), potatoes and veg. like green beans.

My grandfather always goes for either the perch (21,30€) or the salmon (18,00€) and he's never complained. My grandmother takes the fried liver and really enjoys it.

I've had the beef steak (24,00€), beef fillet steak (27,30€) and mutton (22,70€). They've always been good and most importantly cooked to my liking (medium rare). The sides have always been good and there have always been plenty of them. The sauces have been well thought out too.

The salad bar is included in all the main courses and it's really great. Stocked with fresh salads, pickled veg., cheeses, fish and bread. This is miles above most salad bars in Tampere.

It's no wonder that my grandparents like Aino&Ilmari. There is an air of old time nostalgia to the place. The service reflects the whole feel of the place; it is kind of old fashioned but honest and straightforward at the same time. Good food and lovely company means I'll have fond memories of this place.

Went to Inez with a large group of friends to celebrate a birthday. Wasn't sure what to expect but was happily surprised. Instead of ordering tapas we opted for the main courses.

I chose the Squids filled with Chorizo sausage (14,50€) and a side of grilled corn on the cob (4,00€). In retrospect I suggest you order some tapas even if you are going for the mains. Firstly because it's nice to nibble on something while waiting for the mains to arrive and secondly because the tapas looked really good!

The squids filled with chorizo dish was a very plump squid stuffed with delicious chorizo, tomato, onions, garlic and other spices. The dish was finished off with a delicious tomato sauce. The squid was soft, not tough at all, basically cooked to perfection and the stuffing was well seasoned. The corn on the cob was sweet sweet buttery garlicy goodness. Very good!

The hamburger with 3 sauces came in a bagel like bun with a thick juicy steak. Two out of the three sauces were very good but the third was a bit of a miss. The manchego cheese salad was apparently incredible. The grilled chicken with Piri-Piri sauce was a whole spring chicken sized chicken. It smelt delicious and apparently was very good. Finally the most showy dish in my opinion was the ribs dish, a big plate of delicious ribs. I'll definitely be back for those!

The authentic sidra natural list is very impressive and I recommend having one of those with tapas. They also have a list of cocktails ranging from 5-7,90€ (if I remember correctly) and of course you can get sangria (by the glass or in a pitcher)!

The service was nice. The decor was very nice, reminiscent of a lobby bar of a swanky hotel but a little bit more intimate.

Would like to go back maybe for a glass of wine/cider and some tapas with some friends or for dinner to try out one of those good looking main dishes.

SECOND VISIT - 05 April 2010

We started off by ordering drinks at the bar, which is easier said than done. This is because of the extensive list of wonderful ciders (Sidra Natural) that Inez is known for. But luckily the staff is knowledgeable and for 1,00€ you can buy small sips so you can make up your mind. In the end we settled on Mayador Valdedios (6%) 15,00€/75cl very low carbon cider with a very unique flavor profile. Apparently a good example of the new trend of sidra naturals. The cider came with an electronic apple pump gadget that was really fun and entertaining. You place your glass on the stand and then press a button and the cider squirts out of the plastic apple pump. Seriously quirky!

We thought it would be nice to nibble on something whilst waiting for the main courses so we took some salted almonds 3,00€ and marinated mushrooms. The almonds really hit the spot. They were lightly roasted with just the right amount of salt. The marinated mushrooms had some nice oil, garlic and parsley and a couple of sliced of bread to mop up the delicious marinade. I also thought it was a nice touch that they were lightly sprinkled with fleur de sel. They really set the mood for the food to come.

For our main course we decided to take the grilled chicken with Piri-Piri sauce 14,50€ and pork ribs with Piri-Piri sauce 17,50€, two dishes I’d drooled over during my previous visit. Of course I had to have some of the delicious corn on the cob 4,00€ and the frites with 3 sauces 4,00€. The grilled chicken was a small chicken roasted with herbs and garlic. It turned out to be very delicious and moist with crispy skin. The pork ribs were also falling off the bone delicious, just the way they should be. They were sticky and a little sweet and very filling. The Piri-Piri sauce was good too. Out of the 3 sauces that came with the frites I liked the garlic-y one and the creamy one, but the red sauce wasn’t to my liking. However my companion liked it more than the garlic-y one. We also had a warm grilled octopus tapas 4,00€ which was very yummy.

After eating so much delicious food we were so full that we just couldn’t fit any dessert into our bulging stomachs so we were recommended some cocktails. We choose the chili mojito and the traditional one. The chili mojito packed a real punch so I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart. However for me it was just perfect just enough to get my adrenaline pumping but still very good tasting. The traditional mojito was good like mojitos always are! They were just the trick to rounding off a wonderful meal and a nice evening

I highly recommend Inez as a place to have a romantic dinner or for grabbing a couple of drinks and tapas after work.

(This review is only for the pub.) True to its name the restaurant and brewery is housed in an old school house. The whole decor, atmosphere and even smell screams old school house and it was just the perfect place to sit down with a glass of beer (or cider), read the paper and chat for a few hours.

I’ve tasted their unfiltered lager Lehtori, cranberry cider and black currant cider, all products of the brewery. The beer was OK. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t that good either, a bit of a let down. The currant cider was really fun. To be honest it tasted like homemade black currant juice, which was not a bad thing at all. The cranberry cider however was by far the best. It tasted like a very nice lambic, not so much like a cider. Can’t wait to go back to try out more of their stuff!

I went for a chicken and sun dried tomato salad with Parmesan flakes, croutons and Caesar salad dressing. The salad was fresh and crunchy. The chicken was a little bit tough but the huge dollop of sun dried tomatoes made up for that. A basic salad and bread roll combo. It was satisfying but nothing special.

After the salad I had to try the coffee and at least one of the pastries. I opted for the Cafe Brahe latte and carrot cake and it turned out to be delicious! The cake was moist, flavorful and everything a carrot cake should be. The cake was definitely worth the money!

Service was efficient but perhaps a touch stuck up.
