Delicious food in danger of overpricing.
Mountain offers solid Nepalese cuisine and has gotten a fair share of praise from satisfied customers. I'm glad to say that I'm one of those customers but at the same time afraid that I might have to reconsider my take on the restaurant sooner or later.
Mountain has always had excellent food; no doubt about it. The portions are big with plenty of quality ingredients and the seasoning is spot on. Most of the dishes are accompanied by Dal bean stew and Raita sauce which both have perfect texture. Delicious Naan bread is also included.
The interior of the restaurant is nothing too special but not too bad either. There isn't too much empty space and the tables are pretty close-set. The level of service depends quite a lot on who happens to be your waiter/waitress that night but I have never received bad or rude service in any way.
The only problem with Mountain is that it's popularity is really starting to show in the prices. I remember a time when almost all of the dishes cost 10-12 €. At that time there was no question what was the best Nepalese in town and Mountain was worth a travel even from a medium distance. However the prices have been on a fast rise and have already reached a point where Mountain is now on the same line as any other restaurant of same or better attributes. This is a problem because Mountain doesn't enjoy a great location downtown but is rather far away from everything. Despite the great food, I don't see myseIf taking the trip very often if the prices continue to rise.
Ehdottomasti yksi parhaista Helsingin nepalilaisista/intialaisista ravintoloista.
Parempaa nepalilaista on vaikea Helsingistä löytää!
Nepalese done right: no frills, no bells, but among the most tender chicken I have eaten in ethnic restaurants in this price-range. Mountain did not disappoint dispite high expectations due to the good reviews. The food should be considered the bar for good standard Nepalese/Indian in Helsinki. The chicken (Chicken Masala & Mountain Special Chicken) were perfect, no hint of yesterday's reheated rubbery chicken - like in so many other places. The spicing was done right (meaning there actually were spices and some hotness) for once. There were no surpises in the composition and taste, rather it is what you come to expect in terms of tastes and spices - but it is done right and with care, and it is accompanied by good attentive service, all which is not standard fare in Helsinki's Central Asian restaurant scene. Bonus points for a good vegetarian selection and excellent cardemom tea, a small minus for the tepid dal-bean sauce and the slightly disappointing Naan.
