I like restaurants that pay attention to the freshness and quality of the ingredients that they use. This is not limited to fine dining restaurants—give me a fantastic sandwich bursting with real flavor over a mediocre foie gras any day.

Europeisk matSurprisingly good, fresh, al dente pasta, made properly so the sauce soaks in. The cooks are FAST, but the lines are many and long, and it can be frustrating/oddly stressful to stand waiting for your food in this noisy full-on cafeteria atmosphere with people anxiously fidgeting behind you--I usually take it to go and get out as fast as I can. Try the more exotic pasta varieties--they had some salmon artichoke-heart pasta that was really excellent.

I've been to this place countless times now, since it seems to be one of the few places in Helsinki that serves real Chinese food(the cozy homemade kind), instead of bland localized "Chinese"(ie the same sauce from a can poured on the protein of your choice). The dishes themselves taste fresh and real, not industrial or "cheap". The menu is extensive, and each dish is really its own thing, not just a version of a central recipe. Beijing Duck was lovely, as was their 5-spiced lamb, however their vegetable dishes really shine(and I'm no vegetarian); try the Garlic Eggplant/Korean Eggplant in particular. There's also real Gyoza!(dumplings) If you want something really exotic, get the innocuously named Boiled Fish: this dish uses Sichuan Peppers, which are crazy tongue-numbing lemon flavored things that taste like nothing else. Also, regarding some of the comments here: In China you eat several dishes communally, meaning you're not necessarily going to get meat and veggies on the same plate. Go with a friend and get a meat dish and a veggie dish, then share, or just make sure to ask for a dish that contains both. And the spicy dishes are indeed REALLY spicy. They're supposed to be. Don't you dare water down this authenticity by complaining about them being too hot for you to eat! Let there be at least one chinese place that doesn't turn into Finn-chinese just to please the local milder palate.

Asiatisk matYes, yes yes! Simple little out-of-the-way place serves GREAT Japanese food worthy of a fine dining restaurant. One chef who clearly knows what he's doing (looks like he's the owner, too), and an open kitchen so you can watch him work. Japanese food beyond sushi. Set menu. Go. Go go go so they thrive and move someplace more central!

Europeisk matService was personable and efficient, no problems there in my case. The pizza is fine but not great, and the beer selection just is what it is, the usual suspects. Maybe the decor promises too much (reminds me of Chicago breweries) but I left more disappointed with what was on offer than I probably would have been if the place looked more like your average Finnish pub.

Asiatisk matIt's funny that most sushi restaurants outside of Japan are all about the Kyoto-style clean black lines on white, wood surfaces, etc...this place reminds me more of the other heart of Japan, that old style mixed with funny kitch, like a wall made of beach-like waves with a flatscreen TV at the center, broadcasting random beachy travel videos. But why not? Tokyo is all about that kind of stuff. In a surprisingly appropriate pairing with the decor, the sushi on offer is not only decent, but interesting. They've got makis you won't get elsewhere, not sure if they're their own crazy experiments or from some obscure sushi recipe book, but it's nice to have more interesting options. Again, why not? I agree with Tomaattiomeletti that the ones with cream cheese are over-heavy on the cheese, but the ones with seaweed (Geisha? don't remember) were really nice. I can forgive flaws like that while they're sorting things out at the start. Service is perfectly friendly and attentive. I'll go again.

I'm always suspicious when I see a new restaurant get ratings this high right off the bat, but this place, again, deserves it. Had some delicious carrot soup and amazing fish, both at reasonable lunch prices. (They're also using some really lovely olive oil) The only disappointment was the surprisingly office-meeting quality coffee which the warm foamed milk did not save, and the desserts were nothing special. But the mains made it all worth it. Many restaurants have come and gone at this particular cursed location, but I hope this one stays.

Asiatisk matDelicious sushi, with the rice spiced just right and the fish melt-in-your-mouth fantastic. Best in Helsinki, seriously. In addition to the regular fare, they also offer fatty tuna and a bunch of their own makis. I hadn't been back in ages, but am delighted I stopped by again, should do so more often.

Hole-in-the-wall, bare-bones but homey decor(Russian books on the wall, Russian TV playing) with genuine service. You really get the feeling the owner has put his heart into focusing on what matters, ie the food. Best pelmenis in Helsinki, hands down, served with some kind of slightly spicy paprika(?) spread that gives them a lovely extra kick. Helsinki needs more places like these, where you can eat something delicious, made with love, in a casual atmosphere that's also gentle on your wallet.
Also came here recently with kids, and the staff was just lovely with them. Bonus!

KaféerI do miss the old Engel. There are parts about the renovation of this entire once scruffy cozy building that feel clinical and industrial in a really harsh and soulless way. Engel itself feels like it's still picking up the pieces and in transition. There are signs promising that table service will be back, for example, and sometimes they don't have certain things that appear on the menu. The food I have had is pretty much as I remember it though(which is to say good, non-industrial french-like café food), and the coffee might even be a bit better, though I miss the press-pot coffee they used to offer. Their Eggs Florentine, when available, is amazing.
The main room of course is now much bigger, and there is no back room, but now there are couches in one part. The yard is pretty much unchanged, though I hate the callous renovators for adding industrial steel doors with numerical locks to the basement down the now-asphalt stairs and back entrance of the yard. It's like the place was renovated by people used to industrial workshop spaces.
But still. This, as with many other architectual details and changes, is not Engel's fault. Which is an important distinction to make when reviewing the place--if anything, starting with their sudden eviction, Engel has suffered plenty at the hands of this renovation. So I think they deserve a temporary break for a number of not-quite-under-control things until they can get themselves properly settled in again, which is not going to happen overnight.

Maybe something has changed here? We received good basic food made of real ingredients and cooked well(juicy chicken, not dry) outstanding when compared to other amusement park fare, and even when compared to other buffet chains in the center. Organic, too, and decent wine. Really nice old building, friendly service. Not sure why the past reviews have been so harsh, maybe they were expecting too much?

Annan etnisk matKaféerReal Mexican food!! Seriously! Better than any I've had in the US, even in California. Only time I've had food like this was in Mexico proper, at a small place a bit away from the tourist spots, where the locals ate.
Tortillas here are made by hand with just corn flour and water, not machine or bought from a store with other stuff mixed in. This means the texture is a LOT different from the tortilla package you pick up from K-Kauppa. If the mexican chain restaurants in Finland are your benchmark of what mexican food should taste like, please, please go elsewhere and leave the free seats to others. That kind of mexican should have its own name, perhaps.
How about Finn-Mex? Let that be a new hybrid cuisine, on a separate taste planet with rules and standards of its own. The stuff they serve here is Mex-Mex, the long lost and forgotten ancestor of Finn-Mex who once whispered misunderstood recipes down a crackly phone line to Helsinki back in the eighties. May these two stay far, far apart from each other and let no incestuous liaison occur between them, ever. Thank you.

I've had lunch here several times, and have yet to be disappointed. Staff seemed a bit reserved at first, but fundamentally I've found them to be really nice in practice. Seems like some of them might just be the more quiet sort. They've been perfectly welcoming to me even when I've come in all scruffy and unkempt from biking in. White tablecloths are out, but I don't feel like I should be dressing to impress, though I could bring someone here for a more formal meeting. In the meantime, I've had incredible meat and pasta dishes, and one pea soup I'll never forget. Price is higher than your average lunch, but the food is also clearly better than your average lunch, which I find a fair compromise.

Europeisk matKaféerCarusel has gone through some major overhaul in the kitchen, and the results look good. I used to have a pretty low opinion of their food, and showed up to meet a friend there rather apprehensive about my lunch prospects. Was pleasantly surprised by a lovely open faced sandwich with goat cheese and fresh lunchmeats, good drink selection and truly delicious home-made pulla. If you've had bad experiences in the past, go again. It's still cafeteria food, but it's a better sort than most, effort has clearly been made and even the staff seem more helpful than I remember. Finally the food matches the view.

KaféerWhat a lovely little gem of a cafe! Someone here has obviously been to France. Great cheese selection, attention paid to what kind of ham is in the sandwiches, and so on. Friendly, helpful staff, "sympathetic" cozy environment with a flower shop at the other end that must increase the fresh oxygen levels in the whole place. Go give them your money so they'll stay in business.

This is one of the restaurants in Finland that I find myself recommending to friends again and again. Great, honest food, especially the meat dishes, at a decent price. Lunch in particular is a steal at 10€. And they're really nice to kids, even though this is a finer sort of place. All in all, they do the bistro experience right: the white tablecloths are definitely out and there are skilled professionals at work, but it's not uptight.

Best smoothies in town, more elaborate and subtle than your average yogurt-and-fruit variety by far. If you get one of the heavier ones(ask the guy behind the counter for a recommendation) they work as a light lunch. They also have lovely homemade raw chocolates from time to time. Trendy-stylish place, though a bit small. Worth taking a bit of a detour for if you're in the area.
