Restaurant: Ravintola Malabadi

Olen Balkanista kotoisin.

Great lunch/dessert place with surprisingly amazing coffee!

Pyymäen Oma is located in a very busy part of town and tends to attract a lot of people throughout the week. If you come around lunchtime, you might have trouble finding a seat. There is a glass terrace with tables for two, but most of the establishment´s sound system seems to be located there, so the music can be a little loud. The cafe itself has a lovely, cozy atmosphere.

As soon as you enter, you are greeted by their food counter. Their cakes are amazingly tasty, well-made and good value and I haven´t tasted a single one that I wouldn´t recommend to anyone. Their munkit are delicious, but they aren´t always as crispy and fresh as they could be, since they fry in batches and then let them sit in the display window. They also stock a variety of panini breads which they optionally warm up in a panini press. The freshness of the toppings isn´t anything to write home about, but the bread itself is the closest I´ve ever had to an Italian panini in Tampere - Crispy, grilled deliciousness.

By far the nicest surprise of this place is the coffee. They have a dedicated barista running a beautiful espresso machine full-time, serve locally roasted coffee and make the most spotless, high-quality latte art I have seen in a while. The dark-haired barista in particular makes the best coffee I´ve tasted in Tampere, hands down.

Came there for the cake. Stayed for the coffee.

Restaurant: Umami

I have visited this place to grab a quick sushi lunch on several occassions. It is a proper, sit-at-the-counter sushi restaurant, with the chef serving you straight from the prepping counter.

While the place is in a crowded and noisy environment (Kauppahalli) and usually very busy during lunchtime and weekends, you are guaranteed to get a quick meal if you show up before 11 or between 12 and 14. The staff consists of the chef, who is Chinese and has been working in sushi cuisine for most of his life, and an aide, who is Finnish. Both are friendly and speak good Finnish and English.

The only choice you have with the menu is the size, the selection is always omakase - meaning the sushi toppings are left up to the chef.

The sushi itself is great, not unlike something I would expect from a reputable traditional sushi restaurant in Japan.

The rice is properly steamed, formed and served at just the right temperature. The fish for the nigiri is cut perfectly and all the tougher fish are properly scored and marinated. The maki is well-sized, well-proportioned and the fillings are always well balanced and well spiced.

In my experience, the chef has managed to maintain a high level of innovation, balance and deliciousness in his selection of sushi. Some of my past favorites include the goat cheese maki and the charred salmon nigiri.

Salmon and tamago (Japanese sweet omelette) nigiri are usually included in the selection. The tamago is by far the best I have tasted in Finland, fresh, fluffy, moist and wonderfully sweet - the perfect dessert at the end of your meal.

The value for money is outstanding. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of sushi or is willing to give sushi a try. You won´t be disappointed, just avoid the busy hours.

Good coffee place, but slightly spotty service and quality for a specialty roastery. In my three visits to Taikapapu, I have gotten the distinct impression that the place is undersized - getting a seat is usually a problem and customers crowd up in the counter room, getting in the way of the patrons.

The coffee itself is fresh and well-extracted. Unfortunately, their usual espresso blend seems way too roastey to be enjoyable to me. It lacks the chocolatey taste that I would expect from a specialty roastery blend. Perhaps they went through a few bad batches, but I´ve only been able to enjoy milk-based drinks at the place.

As far as milk goes, I have another complaint. Though the milk is generally steamed correctly and served at the proper temperature, the foam quality is nowhere near what I would expect from a specialty roastery. The foam does not stand up properly and the latte art has universally been clumsily done. If this were just a cafe or lunch place, I would be happy. But for a place trying to be a specialty coffee shop, it is slightly disheartening.

The cakes and lunch offerings are a mixed bag. I enjoyed the carrot cake, but the slice served was rather small for its price. The sandwiches are nothing to write home about.

I get the sense that this place could put more pride into the coffee they serve, but they don´t because customers don´t require it.

If you want a decent cup of joe and a bite, come here. If you want the best coffee in Tampere, search elsewhere.
